Mid-Century Character, Modern Confidence

This 85 m², one-bedroom apartment sits in a mid-century European building with generous three-meter ceilings and decades of history in its walls.

When the owners approached Maya, the space hadn’t been touched in over 30 years. Their brief was simple but ambitious: a compact home that would impress guests, feel contemporary, and evolve gracefully with art, objects and future finds – a refined example of mid-century modern apartment interior design that still feels warm and liveable.

Maya treated the apartment as a refined backdrop for social life – the kind of European apartment interior design that works beautifully for hosting as well as everyday routines. The layout was carefully reworked to make the most of the modest footprint, opening up the main living area and giving each function—lounging, dining, cooking—its own clear place without breaking the flow.

Paying homage to the building’s age, the original brickwork in the living room was revealed and restored, bringing depth and texture to the space. Against this, sleek contemporary pieces and a restrained material palette create a quiet tension between old and new, characteristic of thoughtful small apartment interior design.

A bold, ultra-modern blue becomes the signature thread of the project. It appears on the sofa, dining table base, wardrobe doors and bathroom vanity, giving the apartment a distinct identity and connecting rooms that might otherwise feel separate. This touch of colour brings a sense of luxury apartment interior design to an otherwise compact plan.

Throughout the apartment, Maya balances statement elements with calm surfaces. The oak flooring, soft plaster walls and exposed brick set a warm, neutral base. Onto this, she layers graphic black-and-white patterned tiles, sculptural lighting and bespoke joinery pieces that were designed specifically for the project.

The entry sequence is carefully choreographed: a custom partition filters the view into the living space, while cabinetry and furniture are chosen to feel both welcoming and composed. Every item—from the console and pouf to the dining table and sofa—earns its place, contributing to the overall composition without overwhelming the modest scale. It’s a clear example of small luxury apartment interior design, where each decision is intentional and long-lasting.

This project was featured in Living Spaces magazine.

This apartment is a clear expression of Maya’s philosophy: honour the building’s character, listen closely to the clients’ lifestyle and aspirations, then create a space that feels personal, impressive and effortlessly liveable—today and for many years to come. For clients in Windsor, London and across the UK who are drawn to European apartment interior design with mid-century character, it’s a blueprint for how a compact home can still feel generous, sophisticated and truly individual.
